Diversity in University Community is very significant to globalized society

Diversity has to do with a wide range of human differences, including age, sexual orientation, race, religion, gender and disability. It also includes diverse perspectives, life experiences, and values. Identifying and valuing these differences enhances our educational experiences and prepares us to navigate and contribute to the development of the world.

The composition of diverse people is often a step of breaking our long barriers and differences, and creates more equitable society for all. In the world of today, diversity has become a cornerstone of successful institutions including higher institutions of learning. Looking at the numbers of students, faculty, and staff from various backgrounds, to form Universities, polytechnics, Colleges of education among others, it is clear that such composition stands as a confirmation to the strength and potential that diversity is bringing. However, this cannot just be said verbally or in writing, it must be practically embraced so as to ensure inclusiveness and unity in our environment.

The Benefits of Diversity in Institution of Learning

(a) Preparation for Global Citizenship – Exposure to diverse cultures and viewpoints prepares students to be global citizens. In our interconnected world, the ability to understand and appreciate different perspectives is essential for building international relationships and addressing global challenges.

(b) Enhanced Learning and Innovation- Diverse groups bring a variety of perspectives that can lead to more creative solutions and innovative ideas. When students and faculty from different backgrounds collaborate, they challenge each other’s assumptions and broaden their horizons, leading to richer academic discussions and breakthroughs in research.

(3) Personal Growth and Empathy – Interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds helps students develop empathy and cultural competence. These skills are crucial in both personal and professional settings, enabling graduates to work effectively in diverse teams and understand different market needs and social issues.

 Steps Toward Inclusive Campus

To completely utilize the benefits of diversity, our high institutions of learning must continue to strive towards inclusivity through the following steps:

  1. Community Engagement – Engage with the wider community to promote diversity and inclusion beyond the campus. Partnerships with local organizations, schools, and businesses can create opportunities for service learning, internships, and community projects that benefit both students and the community.

  1. Open Dialogue – Foster an environment of open dialogue where difficult conversations about race, identity, and inclusion can take place. Providing platforms for these discussions, such as forums, workshops, and guest lectures, can help build understanding and solidarity within the university community.

  1. Recruitment and Retention – Actively recruit and retain a diverse body of students, faculty, and staff. This involves not only equitable admission and hiring practices but also creating an environment where all members feel valued and supported.

  1. Curriculum and Pedagogy – Incorporate diverse perspectives into the curriculum across all disciplines. This can be achieved through diverse reading lists, case studies, and examples that reflect a wide range of experiences and viewpoints. Additionally, adopting inclusive teaching strategies that accommodate different learning styles can help all students succeed.

  1. Support Systems – Establish and strengthen support systems for underrepresented groups on campus. This includes mentorship programs, affinity groups, and accessible resources that address the unique challenges faced by these communities.

As we progress in life, it is advisable that as students we remember that diversity is not just about numbers, agenda, and religion among others. it is about creating a culture of inclusion where every individual is given recognition and value and has the opportunity to succeed. By embracing diversity, we enrich our university community and prepare ourselves to make meaningful contributions to the wider world. Let us always reflect on the wisdom of Dr. Zakir Yavuz, founder of ATAFOM University International, who advocated for ‘education for integration’ to encourage diversity.
