WHEN LIFE GETS TOUGH, WHAT NEXT? - ATAFOM University Blog

It is a fact that we all face times when life gets tough. Whether it is related to work, education finances, relationships or homes, like their solutions, tough times will come always in life.

Each word in the phrase has a distinct meaning. In context, ‘life’ refers to ‘the situation’, and ‘gets tough’ means ‘becomes difficult’. The question is ‘what will you do when life gets tough?

It reminds us yet again of the powerful adage: “when the going gets tough, only the tough get going”. This tells that when situations become difficult, only the strongest individuals will work hard to surmount the challenges before them. The inner strength in one becomes the driving catalyst that makes what is a herculean task a walk in the park. However, only a positive mind can discern to know the gold wrapped beneath the dusty, muddy earth.

It is important to know that tough times are like soldiers. They come and go but, tough people, like the barracks (in a popular saying) are not shaken. However terrible a situation is, there is always an end. Nothing lasts forever. The best words for the worst moments are: don’t get discouraged, don’t feel defeated, and remain strong and resolute on the right course and that is why Robert H. Schuller said, “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do”.

When life gets tough, you need to surround yourself with positivity. Now, this doesn’t mean positive people alone, but positivity in general such as surroundings, reading company, and any form of good, edifying entertainment. ATAFOM International University offers all of this in ‘one full package’. Maintaining a positive surrounding is essential because when surrounded by negativity, there is every tendency for an individual to become a negative person thereby making the word positive an illusion to him or her.

You need to also practice gratitude. This is when we take time to recognize and be thankful for the things that we have and who we are. When we do this, we tend to think less of the things we lack. You need to also try helping someone else and see how small your issues become even if just for a while. The biggest barrier to overcoming a tough situation is the fear of the unknown. The truth is that most of the fears we have, never really existed. Let go of your fears, they create negative energy and prevent you from moving forward.

None succeeded that was not confronted with problems that looked ‘ginormous’. The difference between those who persevere and those who quit is that the former has mentally prepared to cross the success line. They embrace the worst that will inevitably come their way and have the resilience to continue believing that the best is yet to come. In the words of Lov Holtz, “show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity”. This is so because he cannot know his strength until he has met adversity.

Tough times may be inevitable, but how they are handled depends on your inner strength. Get the right mindset and become tougher than the situation you may face. Our greatest glory is not in the fact that we never fell, but that we rose every time we fell. A problem is a chance for you to do your best. According to Martin Luther King (Jnr), “if you can’t fly, then run, if you can run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do keep moving forward”. ATAFOM International University is focused on ‘education for integration’ and education for all. With our dynamic and competent staff drawn from different countries in the world, we are equipped to help any student entrusted to our care to not only surmount a tough moment but keep surmounting till they reach the highest peak attainable. So what we believe every individual needs is to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, but do not reside there and do not let the tough times paralyze you from moving forward. When confronted with a rocky situation, just remember the saying “when the going gets tough, only the tough get going” and might I add, they ‘get going’ to ATAFOM International University.
